Dr. Meg Jay Comes to Adrian!

As many of you may know, Adrian College was privileged today with a visit from Dr. Meg Jay, a clinical psychologist, who spoke at the convocation in the Adrian Tobias room. Dr. Meg Jay is the author of

The Defining Decade,

a book with the ongoing theme, "thirty is not the new twenty."

The Defining Decade

is filled with helpful tips for young adults in their twenties and thirties, and Dr. Meg Jay also provides some of her own personal collection of events and milestones that she went through in her twenties and thirties.

"The message is to reject common wisdom that your 20s don't matter. 30 is NOT the new 20. You're deciding your life right now!" -Dr. Meg Jay

Dr. Meg Jay, Author of

The Defining Decade

"Your 20s are a developmental sweet spot that only happen once in life...make it count."

-Dr. Meg Jay

Dr. Meg Jay is aware of the evolution that occurs continuously in society today, and the pressures that rest upon the shoulders of twentysomethings everywhere. Using what she has learned from her own personal experiences, Dr. Meg Jay has developed a useful set of guidelines to help twentysomethings everywhere avoid making the same mistakes she did as a young adult. Below are some of the excerpts from

The Defining Decade

, as well as some of Dr. Meg Jay's own words spoken at the convocation today.

A collection of quotes spoken by Dr. Meg Jay from today's convocation:

"Ask, what do I want? What am I waiting for?"

"Don't get to thirty and empty-handed regarding careers."

"Take your relationships seriously. I didn't take mine seriously soon enough...I wish I had taken my dating life seriously sooner."

"GPAs are great, but they're not as great as a willingness to work hard. Employers want employees who are willing to learn."

"All you need is one 'yes' to get a job. One 'yes' in your 20s can change your entire life."

"The single best thing you can do (to get a job post-college) in college is to start to cultivate your weak ties."

" The best time to work on your marriage is before you have one. "

"Too many 30- and 40somethings grieve about their 20s and say 'what was I doing?"

"Engage with the world! There is a number of years where your life is about you...so head where you want to be in ten years."

Thirty is NOT the new twenty.

"Drawing from more than ten years of work with hundreds of twentysomething clients and students, Dr. Jay weaves the science of the twentysomething years with compelling, behind-closed-doors stories from twentysomethings themselves. She shares what psychologists, sociologists, neurologists, reproductive specialists, human resources executives, and economists know about the unique power of our twenties and how they change our lives. The result is a provocative and sometimes poignant read that shows us why our twenties do matter. Our twenties are a time when the things we do–and the things we don’t do–will have an enormous effect across years and even generations to come."
