Greetings all! It's that time of year again...and yes you know exactly what I'm referring to--Valentine's Day! I know half of you are probably groaning right now and the other half are probably jumping with excitement for this coming Thursday. Good news is I have several solutions no matter what you're looking to do for Valentine's Day, whether you're trying to impress a crush, having a special evening with your special someone, or ridin' solo in the single life.
As you can see I had way too much fun creating this picture :p
The great thing about Valentine's Day is that it's a day you can spend with a loved one or someone special and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Many people, guys in particular, think that every Valentine's Day means another $60 bucks for a dozen roses and another $30 for good chocolates. However, it only takes a little creativity to come up with something cheap and impressive that your date will love!
Dinner and a Movie, the Cheap Way
Around Adrian, there are video rental stores within walking distance with super cheap prices. Pick out a couple of cute movies appropriate for your date night and Valentine's Day. As for the dinner part, dorm rooms and apartments can be a little limiting when it comes to your cooking options. However, if you're still looking to cook something for your date, perhaps a well-cut turkey sandwich or a toasted BLT panini would be a good option.
If you don't have a toaster, The website
always has some really great cooking options for college students, as well as other popular sites such as
. If you're not looking to cook for your date, perhaps ordering takeout if you don't have a car could work for you, or Half-Off Apps at Applebee's (appetizers half-off after 10pm) is another cheap alternative if you do have a vehicle.
On top of the meal and a rented movie, a DIY Valentine is always cheap, cute, easy and thoughtful to give to your date! :) If you're looking for ideas, there are plenty all over the internet! I found the image above simply by googling "DIY Valentine."
Something Small But Personal
If you're not looking to dedicate a ton of effort and your entire evening to someone on Valentine's Day but you would still like to make a small gesture, there are plenty of little things you can do to express your interest in a cute way.
Single...and Not Looking!
You may also find yourself without a date on Valentine's Day. Whether you are happy about this or not, there are still ways for you to celebrate Valentine's Day on your own. What you do on Valentine's Day all depends on your attitude towards it. If you enjoy Valentine's Day even if you are single, find some other friends that feel the same way and get together to watch chick flicks and eat conversation hearts and chocolate. Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse for a girls night! Paint each other nails red, put on red lipstick and get a $2 box of valentine's to give to one another. Celebrate being single over some cheap wine and old CD's from high school!
I'm Bitter and I know It >:(
If you find yourself hating Valentine's Day, cringing at all candy and anything red, perhaps you find yourself having gone through a recent break up or have been trying to get over an ex for a while now. In this case, watching chick flicks is probably not the best idea for you. However, I do have a list of some good post-break up songs to listen to while you're hating your life this Thursday. Hopefully they can easy a bit of your pain!
